The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco undoubtedly represents one of the most familiar landmarks to be found anywhere within the United States of America.

Towering over the Golden Gate strait, this suspension bridge is a miracle of engineering. With a total span of 1,300 metres, it’s as breath-taking to view the bridge today as it must have been when this majestic structure opened for the first time back in 1937.

Although the bridge carries six lanes of traffic, there are also dedicated areas for pedestrians and cyclists. The main walkway, located on the eastern side of the structure, is open to pedestrians between the hours of 5 am and 6 pm throughout the week, with access available until 9 pm during Daylight Saving Time (DST). Opening hours are slightly more limited for cyclists.

When you get up close to the Golden Gate Bridge, you get to see the orange colour of the paintwork. That shade of orange was specifically selected to complement the natural surroundings. A team of 38 painters are employed to ensure that the paintwork is maintained throughout the year.

The bridge has proved capable of surviving high winds and earthquakes, with a number of structural modifications having been made over the years. For visitors, it provides a wonderful viewing point, with San Francisco on one side and Marin County on the other.

There is no fee for those wishing to walk across the bridge. If you are intending to drive across the bridge, then be aware that there is a small toll, payable by those cross to the San Francisco side of the structure.

It’s hard to imagine the city of San Francisco without the presence of the Golden Gate Bridge. No visitor to the city should ever miss out on visiting this great American icon.
