Best Areas to Stay in Mexico City (Neighbourhoods)

Here’s a breakdown of the best areas to stay in Mexico City.

Airbnbs in Mexico City, Mexico

La Condesa

La Condesa is my favourite area in Mexico City. I spent a month living in Condesa, and really loved it.

Condesa has an excellent range of places to eat, drink, shop, work, and party. But it’s also very peaceful and calm. The streets are clean, tree-lined, and dotted with attractive cafes, rooftop bars, and restaurants.

Many of the best apartments in Mexico City are located in La Condesa, such as this one. There’s a great deal of beautiful architecture, and several well-maintained parks that are great places to escape to from the urban sprawl.

Condesa is also one of the safest areas in the city. I walked around extensively day and night and felt totally safe, even late into the evening. Have a look at our full list of the best Airbnbs in Condesa here. Or check out this gorgeous, luxury apartment.

Reforma is well-known for its many fantastic restaurants and bars. The large number of expats who choose to live here also gives the neighbourhood a distinctively international feel. The apartments here are modern and well-decorated and there’s a fantastic rooftop patio! Click here for details.

Some of Mexico City’s best museums, art galleries and other attractions are located either in or close to this area. For example, both Chapultepec Park and the must-visit National Museum of Anthropology, are within easy walking distance.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that’s central, vibrant and packed with things to do, Reforma is a great choice. But it can also be a little noisy and busy, so keep this in mind if you prefer a more relaxed pace of life.

Roma is another excellent place to base yourself. It borders Condesa, and shares many of the features of that area. It’s full of fantastic bars, cafes, and a huge range of places to eat that suit all budgets.

The main difference between Roma and Condesa is that Roma feels a little more edgy and hipster. For example, you’ll see lots of graffiti and murals here – most of which is expertly created and looks amazing. And of course, several vintage clothing shops.

Like all of the other districts mentioned here, Roma is very well-connected and has excellent public transport links to other parts of the city. Here is a great Mexico City apartment in Roma.

Centro Histórico – Best Place to Stay in Mexico City for Budget Travellers

The historic downtown of Mexico City is known as the Centro Histórico, and is one of the city’s most visited areas. The Palacio Nacional, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Templo Mayor are all located in this district.

The area is well-known for its lively ambiance and has excellent public transport connections to the rest of the city.

Centro Histórico is busy, noisy and urban. If you prefer staying in quiet, peaceful areas, this probably isn’t the best place for you to find an Airbnb in Mexico City. However, if you like being in the middle of all of the action, Centro Histórico might be a good option.

The area has decent budget accommodation options, such as this one, making it popular with backpackers and budget travellers. Here you’ll also find a great range of cheap places to eat and drink. Have a look at this top-rated accommodation.

In Conclusion

Now that you know about some of the best Airbnbs in Mexico City, it’s time to pick your favourite.

But even if all of these options are fully booked on your dates, don’t worry. All of the neighbourhoods mentioned in this article are great, and there are a huge number of places to stay in this incredible city.

You won’t struggle to find somewhere that’s perfect for your needs and preferences.

However, if you’re still not sure where to start, I recommend looking in La Condesa. It’s a truly amazing part of the city. I’d move back here in a heartbeat.
