James’ Expertise

As a budget backpacker turned van lifer, I have been traveling the world and writing about my experiences for nearly a decade.

I’ve written for many large publications and blogs and also cofounded and grown multiple of my own travel and destination blogs.

James’ #1 Travel Tip

Go slow. Although whistle-stop tours can be fun and exciting, I find that really taking your time to get under the skin of a place gives you a much deeper experience. So rather than trying to pack lots of destinations into one trip, pick one and really get to know it.

James’ Favorite Food

Ramen. And specifically Tonkotsu. Slow-cooked, creamy pork bone broth, firm noodles, a soft egg, and thinly sliced pork. Perfection. By far the best I’ve tried was in Fukuoka, Japan.

Favorite Travel Experience

I once fell for a scam on the way to visit the Great Wall of China where a helpful guy told me and my wife we’d arrived and I needed to get off at that stop. We were in fact miles away and he was actually a taxi driver with his cab conveniently waiting nearby and an extortionate price in mind to take us the rest of the journey. Out of sheer obstinance, we decided to walk instead, but were literally hours from our intended destination.

Within a few minutes, we met some school kids on their lunch break who we got chatting to as they wanted to practice their English. When we told them what had happened, one of them, Kevin, called a taxi for us and came with us in the cab to the entrance of the Great Wall, and refused to let us pay for the journey. Incredible generosity that instantly restored our faith in humanity.

Where Have You Lived?

As a fan of slow travel I’ve lived in quite a few places over the past 8 years. Buenos Aires (Argentina), Barcelona (Spain), Sucre (Bolivia), Mexico City (Mexico), and most recently St George’s (Grenada).

Funny Travel Quirk

I always take a jar of Marmite with me on my travels wherever I go. If you don’t know what Marmite is, it’s a British spread that you put on bread or toast.

Marmite’s tagline is “you either love it or hate it”. Everyone I’ve introduced it to on my travels hates it without exception.
